Harms: Something needs to be done about ACCESSNebraska efficiency

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska state lawmakers are working on improving service for residents trying to enroll for public benefits.

Last year, a legislative report says the 'ACCESSNebraska' program was failing to meet its client's needs.

They say there is a high rate of busy signals for callers and long wait times for service.

The system relies on a website and call centers to determine whether Nebraskans qualify for public benefits.

Concerns about the program have forced the Nebraska legislature to create a committee to investigate the effectiveness of the program.

Performance Audit Committee Chairman John Harms says something needs to be done.

"Unless we continue to ask the questions and continue to have a committee looking into this particular issue- it will not get better. It just simply will not get better. That's been the history and that's been the culture of Health and Human Services."

The legislative committee would be required to issue a report back to the legislature with its findings and recommendations no later than December 15th of this year.
