Demand for public transportation increases locally

Posted: Updated:

A new report from the American Public Transportation Association shows that the amount of Americans using public transportation is at a fifty year high.

Here in Scotts Bluff County, the primary public resource for locals to get around is the handy bus.

Peak usage for the service was in the late 2000's, but director of operations Carol Prince says they continually have more and more people signing up for the service.

Each year, Handy Bus drivers make more than ten thousand trips.

"The Handy Bus is open to the public, so we take all ages. We take the elderly, we take young people, and we take anybody who wants to ride," says Prince.

There are ten buses and about seven on the road at any given time.

Handy Bus operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4p.m. and costs locals just a few dollars to get anywhere in the county.
