SBNM draws a large percent of international visitors, interested in the 'Opening of the West'

Nebraska's four National Parks brought in just over 13-million dollars in revenue for the state in 2013.
The Scotts Bluff National Monument accounted for just under 6-million of those funds.

Park Superintendent Ken Mabery says the Monument has the largest tourism draw of all the National Parks in the state.

Mabery says they get a mix of visitors to the Monument each year.

He says a lot of locals come daily to use the trails and a lot of travelers coming cross-country visit along their way.

Mabery says surprisingly, the Monument attracts quite a large percentage of international visitors.
"It's interesting to note that Scotts Bluff National Monument gets a higher percentage of international visitors than most national parks and most people respond that they are fascinated by the opening of the west story, because in Europe, in the Orient, there's no equivalent story. So this is a unique story to most visitors."
Mabery says visitor numbers have been low in recent years due to budget cuts, the government shutdown, and heavy storms, but he expects tourism to increase as more tourism projects develop.
