Col. Tom Brewer visits panhandle; set to challenge Adrian Smith

Posted: Updated:

A two-time Purple Heart recipient and 36-year Army veteran visited the panhandle this weekend campaigning for the Republican nomination for Nebraska's Third District Congressional seat.
Retired Colonel Tom Brewer of Gordon is challenging Congressman Adrian Smith.

Yesterday, Brewer stopped by KOTA Territory News and spoke about issues he's hearing from residents.

He said veterans are frustrated about the proposed closure of the Hot Springs V.A. Hospital.

He says there needs to be alternatives to protect those who were promised they'd be taken care of.

He also spoke about his support of the controversial XL oil pipeline expected to run through eastern Nebraska.
"I've done a lot of research and I'm here to tell you that I think the pipeline is safer than the 18 or so pipelines already coming through Nebraska. A lot of thought has went into that since they rerouted it and I know it's still not a perfect route because there's parts were it skirts the edge of the Sandhills..."
Brewer went on to say for America's own security we need the pipeline.

He also mentioned supporting ethanol and that Americans cannot rely on the oil from the Middle East too much longer.

He says with Ukraine's border-control problems and Iran's capability of having a nuclear weapon, America needs to be energy independent.

When asked if he would like to have a debate with Smith, Brewer said he'd love to have one.

"I haven't received any feedback, positive or negative from Adrian's office. We're going to continue to push forward and try and make it possible to have one but it may be a bridge too far."
