Lied Library celebrating 'kinder-carding' after 20 years

Posted: Updated:

It's been 20 years since the first library cards were given out to kindergartners.

To celebrate the Scottsbluff Lied Library is continuing that tradition more than ever.
It's called the Kinder-Carding Campaign.

Scottsbluff Children's Librarian Deb Carlson says the purpose is to make sure all kindergartners get that first library card and start on the road to life-long learning.

She says she visits students at their schools and gives out invitations so that they can visit the library and get their first card.

When they do visit, they'll also get a few small gifts.

Carlson, who has been a part of the library for 35 years says she enjoys affecting the lives of children.
"Studies are still showing over and over that children who are read to too young and that continue to read do better in school, do better in life. It's just a success story for the children who are read to we just don't want to miss any of them."
Carlson says all kindergartners are welcome to visit the library and that they don't have to live just in Scottsbluff.
