Numerous drunk drivers pulled off the road during weekend DUI checkpoints

The luck of the Irish was not with motorists who chose to drink and drive this weekend.
The Nebraska State Patrol and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Department was out in full force this weekend.

Their goal? "We're going to be asking the drivers for driver's license, proof of registration, proof of vehicle insurance," explains Trooper Nicholas Goodwin. "And (we'll) determine whether or not that individual is safe to proceed on public roads."
The enforcement efforts began Friday night, and drivers were mostly compliant. However a select few drivers were caught driving under the influence and taken to jail.

Troopers say their main goal is promoting traffic safety and reducing the occurrence of fatality accidents.

And don't be surprised if you come across one more round of D.U.I. checkpoints tonight for the Saint Patrick's Day holiday. The Nebraska State Patrol received grant money to pay for overtime hours for these compliance checks.
