City of Gering imposes new "dumpster diving" trash ordinances

Posted: Updated:

The city of Gering instated a new ordinance which imposes harsher punishments for those who litter outside of dumpster's.

City Ordinance 1979 will make it unlawful for anyone to spill trash from a dumpster.

The ordinance requires the 'exercise of reasonable care' to prevent spillage or scattering while removing or adding items to or from an approved container.

Gering Mayor Edwin Mayo says there are quite a few 'dumpster-divers' in the city that have been leaving litter scattered on city streets.
"It will put teeth in it so that if they are caught they are subject to any of the other littering fines."
