Lake Minatare School to hold community meetings regarding facility assessment findings

Posted: Updated:

Communitymembers are invited to participate in three public meetings to discuss theScottsbluff Public School District's recent facility assessment and the specific issues regarding LakeMinatare's building.

A verybrief summary of the findings regarding Lake Minatare School include:

  1. Immediate needs (within next year):  Replacement ofthe school boiler and associated asbestos abatement at a total cost ofapproximately $150,000. Electrical repairs and necessary replacement of thefire alarm system at a cost of approximately $23,500.
  2. Within the next five years:  Replacement ofentire mechanical system at an approximate cost of $750,000.
  3. Additionally, electrical upgrades are recommended as is the replacement of the roof in a 5-10year span at a cost of approximately $500,000.
  4. The renovation of classrooms or bathrooms or thereconfiguring of instructional or otherwise usable office space or any remodeling or improvements to the interior ofthe building are not included in the above numbers. The estimated cost of thoseimprovements for the building is estimated to be approximately $700,000 basedon "per square foot" estimates in today's dollars.

With the potential of one million plus dollars just toaddress the mechanical and electrical elements of the school and at leastanother half a million dollars to give the facility a much needed renovation,we are clearly facing some difficult decisions.

The Board of Education and district leadership arelooking forward to dialog with the community to help us develop a course ofaction that makes sense for both our Lake Minatare families and our schooldistrict as a whole.

Superintendent Rick Myles, Lake Minatare Principal FrancesBurkhalter, a representative from the Board of Education and a member of theDistrict Facilities Team will be present at all meetings.

The District will be seeking volunteers(particularly those with younger children) to participate on an ongoing taskforce to continue the conversation beyond these three initial meetings.

Communitymembers are invited to participate in three public meetings to discuss theDistrict's recent facility assessment and the specific issues regarding LakeMinatare's building. The meetings will be held at Lake Minatare School on Thursday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m. orTuesday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. orFriday, March 28 at 8:00 a.m. Allmeetings will be at Lake Minatare School.
