Gering Senior Center celebrates 35 years

Posted: Updated:

A panhandle senior center celebrates 35 years in the community today.
Members of the Gering senior center held an anniversary party this afternoon to celebrate the center's 35th birthday.

The center opened its doors on this day in 1979, and it has served hundreds of seniors in the area since.

Congratulatory letters from Representative Adrian Smith, Senator John Harms, and Governor Dave Heineman were sent to the center.

Senior Center Board Director Robert Prester says a good number of senior citizens in the area frequent the center on a regular basis.
"Of course we are happy and we're here after 35 years and it really makes a big difference for senior citizens not only in Gering, but where ever the senior centers are because for a lot of people, this is the only nutritious meal they get."
Prester says despite 35 successful years in the community, the center has recently been struggling with funding because of state cuts.
