Uninsured have a little more than a week to sign up for federally mandated healthcare

Posted: Updated:

Here's a little more than a week left for the uninsured to sign up for a healthcare plan through the open marketplace.
March 31 is the deadline to enroll for health benefits through the online healthcare exchange.

The healthcare.gov website is the place to go for those who are eligible for open enrollment.

The website has state-specific information to help consumers shop for insurance, and to see whether they qualify for federal subsidies to help pay for coverage.

CAPWN Community Bridges Director Chante Truscott says it's best for people to sign up sooner, rather than later, as the March 31 deadline looms.
"So, as we've noticed in the past, when we approach the deadline, the website kind of slows down a little bit, and we have some issues. So we want to make sure that everyone gets in as quickly as possible to get enrolled in coverage to avoid being penalized with that federal mandate."
Those who enroll in a marketplace plan by March 31 will have health coverage effective on May 1.

Truscott says there are enrollment extensions for those with a qualifying life event.
