Beef Burglar arrested following DNA testing

Posted: Updated:

More than five months after a local meat processing business was robbed, police have arrested the man believed to be the culprit.

Back in October, Robinson's Meat Processing in Mitchell was broken into after a window was broken. An estimated $20 was missing from the cash box, and about 43 pounds of processed beef was missing.

A hammer was located on the ground near the broken window, and two blood stains were located. A sample was collected and sent to the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Lab for DNA testing.

57-year-old James Bernhardt was arrested on Friday after the DNA detected in a blood stain was traced back to him.

According the DNA report, the probability of randomly selecting an unrelated individual with the DNA profile from the blood sample is 1 in 7.252 quadrillion in the U.S. Caucasian population.

Bernhardt will be arraigned this afternoon in Scotts Bluff County Court.
