Americans spent record $55.7 billion dollars on their pets in 2013

A new report states Americans spent neatly $56 billion dollars on their pets in 2013.

A spokes person for the American Pet Products Association said the $56 billion dollar mark is an all time high for pet spending.

Food accounted for about $20 billion dollars of that total.

The rest was spent on grooming, toys, treats and pampering.

Deb Schutte, owner of the Pet Oasis Hotel in Gering said she's not surprised that people spend so much money on their pets.

She says pets are accepted as part of the family, and pets are many positive effects on human health.
"I think they realize that not only are they a pet, but they're a companion, they give to your life. They, you know, when you're sad they make you happy. It slows your blood pressure, and I think that's a lot of the reason why people pamper their animals more."
Americans are expected to spend closer to $60 billion dollars on their pets this year.
