Alliance Utility Department project upgrades surge on

Posted: Updated:

Crews with the Alliance Electric Department are upgrading three of the city's four substations before the summer gets underway.
Electric Superintendent Lawrence Heinrich says his department decided to upgrade the substations after one transformer failed three times a few years ago.

The department's switch gears are also being electronically upgraded because they were installed more than 40 years ago.

Heinrich says the changes will make the job easier for his employees, provide more efficient transformers and allow one substation to power up the entire city if needed.

When a power outage happens, residents wait until their electricity is restored. Heinrich says the purpose of the upgrades is not to prevent uncontrollable outages due to weather for example, but rather prevent power blinks and restore power faster.

"Back when I was younger all the clocks were analog and there were no electronic devices. So if the power blinks you didn't know it because your clock kept working. Now if it blinks everything drops back to 12:00 and starts blinking. So all these new upgrades are to help with that, to help our power quality so they don't see that much anymore," said Heinrich.
Heinrich anticipates the project to be completed by the end of May.
