Martinez convicted of 1st Degree Murder from 2012

AttorneyGeneral Jon Bruning today announced 54-year-old Larry Martinez of Sidney was convictedby jury in Cheyenne County District Court for the 2012 death of 30-year-old Mandy Kershman.

He was found guilty on one count of first-degree murder, a Class IA felonyand one count of use of a firearm to commit a felony, a Class IC felony. Hefaces a life sentence for the murder charge.

"Thisman shot and killed Mandy Kershman," said Bruning. "Hopefully, today'sconviction will bring a sense of closure for Mandy's family and friends."

In July 2012, Martinez claimed he had become angry afterreceiving a text message from the victim. Martinez shot Kershman at the home ofa friend after confronting her about the text. She died at the scene.

The victim's family confirmed Kershman and Martinez previouslyhad been involved in a relationship.

Sentencing is set for May 7, 2014.
