Obamacare procrastinators may face penalties

Posted: Updated:

With the final day winding down to sign up for Obamacare, procrastinators may be encountering some issues, and even penalties.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services say that within the past week, the website has supported more than 8.7 million visits.

Early this morning, many online users claim to have encountered a message that read, "The system isn't available at the moment. We're currently performing maintenance. Please try again later."

By eight thirty however, it was up and running again.

The health care website was not the only place receiving heavy traffic today.

According to Navigator Program Specialist Jennifer Severson, the Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska (CAPWN) was busier than usual.

She says there were nearly 40 appointments scheduled between five people.

CAPWN's goal was to help people at the last minute, to avoid penalties.

"Anyone who doesn't enroll by today, March 31st will incur a penalty if they continue to go without health insurance this year," says Severson. "Their penalty will happen on their taxes when they file their tax return for 2014. And the penalty for any individual or family will be no more than one percent of their household income."

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, consumers who attempt to sign up today, but experience technical problems will be given a few additional days to complete the process.
