Hundreds of high schoolers attend Government Day in Gering

Posted: Updated:

Today in Gering, high schoolers in the panhandle received a first hand look at how their local government works to serve the community.
More than one hundred students visited the Administrative Building for Scotts Bluff County Government Day.

County officials gave tours of their offices and explained the roles of what they do to serve residents.

Students also watched a mock trial led by a county judge.

Local and state American Legion leaders say the day is important to help educate the area's youth and get them registered to vote.
"We are a free country," said Beth Linn, Area D Vice Commander for State of Nebraska and American Legion. "They need to know what entails the responsibility as citizens on having that free country and keeping us free."
Morrill High School junior Victor Valles spoke with KOTA Territory News after just visiting the County Clerk's office.

"I think it's important to know everything so you know what they're doing so you can see what's going on around you," he said.
The American Legion hosted the annual event for students from six local high schools.
