Demolition scheduled for former Packerland Meat Plant building

Posted: Updated:

A building that has been sitting vacant for nearly 20 years in the Scottsbluff-Gering area is finally scheduled for demolition.
The building that housed the former Packerland Meat Packing plant on 10th Street will be coming down within the next few weeks.

Mike Sarchet of Twin Cities Development says the building was originally scheduled for demolition in November.

But inspectors found more asbestos was than anticipated and the project was delayed.

Sarchet says the plan to tear down the building has been in place for about five years now, and the developer hopes to start the demolition process later this week.
"Within the next month or so we'll start to see a dramatic change in the landscape in that part of Gering which is something we've been working on with the owners for about 5 years."

Sarchet says the city is looking to re-zone the land for retail or commercial development.

"I think the exciting this is that it is a prime property for development in the Gering area. It has been kind of a waste of resources to have that in the prime corner just sitting there. Now the opportunity will be there to redevelop it."
