K-9 handler conducts bite demonstration during County Government Day

Posted: Updated:

Earlier this week nearly one hundred high school students visited officials and staff members in Scotts Bluff County for County Government Day.

During their time, students had a first hand look of what it would be like working for the sheriff's department.

K-9 Handler for Scotts Bluff County sheriff's department Scott Bibb showed off 2-year-old Xem,  a canine from Holland trained to help law enforcement officials.

During the presentation, Xem sniffed around for a human scent off of a quarter hidden in the grass. He also searched two cars for narcotics and participated in a bite demonstration.

Bibb says it's always a pleasure showing students how deputies and canines work hand-in-hand.

"Hopefully, you know it'll interest a couple of these kids into going into law enforcement and it'll show everybody you know what the capabilities of our K-9 are."

Bibb says in past searches Xem has helped officials recover 128 pounds of marijuana and has been part of locating $13,000 worth of drug money.
