NSP educational efforts focus on teen drivers and seat belt usage

Posted: Updated:

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol are ready to begin a summer-long initiative focusing on teen drivers and wearing seatbelts.
Beginning this month until September NSP Community Service Officers will provide educational programs to students within the community.

The officers will be utilizing the agency's rollover simulators, seat belt convincers and driving simulator.

The programs will explain what could happen if drivers are not wearing seat belts during an accident.

Lieutenant Jamey Balthazor with Troop E urges people to buckle up after a new a survey conducted this year shows just how many drivers use their seat belts.
"We're sitting at the panhandle wide about 67 percent usage which is below the state average so through enforcement and education we've got to convince people that they just need to put seat belts on," said Balthazor.
The educational programs are made possible thanks in part to a 14,250 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.
