City crews upgrading playground surfaces in Alliance

Posted: Updated:

City crews in Alliance are in full swing upgrading playground equipment and surfaces as a part of their spring projects do–to–list.

Crews recently placed recycled rubber mulch on the playground near the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center.

Half the cost for the crash surfacing material was paid for by a grant received by Keep Alliance Beautiful.

Prior to the new upgrades, the playground's surface was once layered with gravel.

Culture and Leisure Services Director Shana Brown says the recycled product will improve the safety equipment and upgrade the facility overall.

"It's a much safer material because it doesn't compact tight like gravel. It's a much more impact resistant, gives a lot more cushion if kids fall," said Brown.

Brown says the city has plans to add a tire swing at another playground for kids to use just in time for the warmer weather.
