Water levels at Lake Minatare expected to near max capacity this summer

Posted: Updated:

Boaters and swimmers have something to look forward to at Lake Minatare this summer.

Despite unusually low water levels at the lake last year, park rangers say they have high expectations for water levels this season.

Park Superintendent Dan Thornton says the lake is expected to near full capacity this year.

"The irrigation district and the bureau of reclamation are the ones who control the water. But in talking with them, and looking at their report it looks like we have a really good chance to get clear full this summer."

Thornton says a hot and dry summer late in the season forced the bureau to draw a lot of water out, and he says water was also drawn so work could be done on the outlet structure.

But Thornton says boaters and swimmers should be able to enjoy a fully filled lake in no time.

"It sounds like we'll start getting water in around the third weekend of this month, so a couple more weeks from now it should be coming in."

Thornton says while the levels have been low, the fish have been abundant, and local fisherman have been taking advantage of the well-stocked lake.
