Reclamation hosts public meeting about current water supply levels

Posted: Updated:

Good news for farmers and ranchers this spring irrigation season - water levels are expected to be "normal" compared to below average levels the last few years.

Staff from the Bureau of Reclamation held a North Platte River water information meeting in Scottsbluff today.

Director Coleman Smith shared a PowerPoint about reservoirs and runoff snow caps in eastern Wyoming and talked about current water supply conditions in the panhandle.

Smith says water consumption and conservation are pivotal at this point in time and that Nebraska as a whole is expected to look great later this summer for irrigators.

"They know what to do with their water," said Smith. "You know, the forecast again is showing a normal runoff and so I'm quite confident that the farmers, irrigators and ranchers will be able to use that water and have enough for the season."

Smith still suggests that irrigators be careful with water usage as there's a 33-percent chance that temperatures near Wyoming reservoirs, Seminoe and Pathfinder, will be a bit higher later this summer.
