Demolition of Toad's Lounge underway in Alliance

Posted: Updated:

Bricks on the vacant Toad's Lounge building in Alliance are falling one by one as crews begin their demolition project this week.

City Manager J.D. Cox says the structure was declared a hazard to the public and that the private owners, Sandhills Sustainability of Berkeley, California, were unable to deal with the building.

Cox says the city had no choice but to move forward in the demolition project.

He says if the owners do not pay for the demolition the city may file a lien against the property or a civil lawsuit within the next year.

"We're really looking forward to completing this project. We'd been concerned about the danger it poses to the public and although you hate to see a building being torn down you can't leave it being a danger so it's our only choice at this point," said Cox.

Last July, the city sent a letter to the owners saying that the building, which was once a bar, was condemned and must be taken care of.
