Home Depot volunteers upgrade 100 year old door locks at Scottsbluff school

Posted: Updated:

Volunteers with the Home Depot in Scottsbluff are replacing classroom door locks that are more than 100 years old at Community Christian School.

Store Manager Bryan Luehrig says the purpose for the upgrades is to ensure the safety of students and staff members in light of recent school shootings and stabbings throughout the country.

The new metal Kwikset door locks will replace the skeleton key locks that were first installed during the late 1800s.

In the past, staff members had several keys for the classroom doors and now there will be one master key once the project is completed.

"There's about 30 classrooms that we're switching out," said Luehrig. "So we're trying to do five a night, trying not to disturb the classroom. So we're coming after class is over...over the next couple of weeks we're going to get it done."

The door lock project comes after Home Depot volunteers revamped the school's band room last month.
