'Couponers' share tips on how to save big on groceries

Posted: Updated:

Irene Anderson has a family of six, and a  grocery budget of just $400 dollars a month.

How does she do it?

"I always have coupons," Anderson says. "And I make my grocery list for my family based off of what's on sale. If its not on sale, then we're not eating it."

Irene is one of many savy-shoppers in the Scottsbluff area who  maximize on their shopping savings - by using coupons.

Anderson spoke at a recent coupon workshop put on by the Relief Society at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help people get into couponing.

"There's people in the community that are having hardships, unemployment, and couponing could be a way to relieve some of those hardships," said Wrayla Spencer, of the Relief Society.

Anderson says couponing saves her family an average of $800 to $900 dollars a month.

"I like to go to Safeway and get everything I can because they'll double my coupons," she says.
"They're like 'Oh, here comes the coupon lady!' and I'm like 'really, I'm not that bad."

Anderson says couponing helps her save money so she can be a stay-at-home mom.

There's many ways to save, she says, by collecting paper coupons, downloading apps, or and shopping sales.

"Safeway has a cool app, its called the 'Just for You" app. Since I downloaded it in July, it said I saved $547 dollars just on that app alone, which is a huge savings!"

Anderson says using coupons allows her family to spend the money they save on groceries on fun things like going out to dinner or the movies.

A new facebook page - called 'Deal Seekers of Scotts Bluff County' - has also been created for people to swap coupons, share local deals, and brag about their shopping savings.
