Sidney PD eyes move closer to center of town

Posted: Updated:

A feasibility study has found that the building the Sidney Police Department currently operates from is unfit for the city's growth.

The police department, located on the west edge of town, was found to have structural issues and is said to be too small for the growing city's needs.

Police Chief BJ Wilkinson says consultants recently studied the existing site, and found it was not recommended for continued use.

He says the city is considering now two options for the future of the police department, either move the into a existing facility, or build an entirely new building from the ground up.

Wilkinson says either way, it's best for the department to move closer to the center of town.

"This site, we're landlocked here. And its not geographically preferable based on the fact that most of our expansion is taking place to the east. So we want to be more centrally located, it gives us better access to points that we may need to respond to."

Wilkinson says a more centrally–located police station also makes it easier for citizens to utilize and find.
