Local baseball stadium receiving facelift thanks to community support

Posted: Updated:

One local KOTA Territory baseball stadium is getting a facelift thanks to the support from community businesses and the city of Alliance.
General Manager of the Alliance Spartans Baseball Steve Holman says the city has collaborated on upgrading Bower and Shankland Baseball Field.

Recently completed projects include conditioning the infield and remodeling the batting cage.

The biggest ongoing project deals with local contractors, Peltz Companies, digging holes in the ground to add a new backstop.

Holman says he hopes the 160 feet by 35 feet backstop will prevent fewer foul balls from landing onto the railroad tracks behind the stadium.

He says kids like to chase after the balls.
"Somebody's always there monitoring them trying to keep them off the track. It's pretty difficult to do. They take the ball to the concession stand and get a prize. So they like to get the ball but as far as safety's concern it's something I noticed right away," said Holman.

Holman went on to say that workers with Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) have contributed to helping with the backstop project.

The home opener baseball game for the senior Alliance team kicks off May 28th.
