Alliance PD warning about scam targeting local businesses

Posted: Updated:

Members of the Alliance Police Department are warning people in the area about another phone scam hitting local businesses.

Lieutenant Ken Hart says a person called a local business after regular business hours and told the business owner to make a payment immediately or the electricity would be shut off.

The person called from a 402 area code and said that they worked for a company named Disconnect Services or Scana Energy. They claim the City of Alliance has contracted with their company to provide disconnect services.

The business owner was asked to electronically transfer money to avoid the electricity being shut off.

The City of Alliance wants people in the community to know that it does not contract with any outside business for disconnect services and does not call businesses after regular business hours.

Past due and disconnect communication is done by mail from the City of Alliance Utility Office and a "Disconnect Hang Tag" is placed on the residence or business door prior to turning off the electricity.

On rare occasions the Utility Office may call a business about disconnecting electrical services.

The police department says if anyone is contacted by a suspicious caller, hang up and call the City of Alliance Municipal Building at 308-762-5400 and ask for the Utility Office.
