Volunteers help keep Scotts Bluff National Monument clean

Posted: Updated:

Park rangers with the Scotts Bluff National Monument got a jump start on Earth Day celebrations with a monumental clean-up today in Gering.

Park rangers and volunteers spent the morning cleaning up trails around the park and picking up trash along the highway.

The annual clean-up was a way for volunteers to show their appreciation for the park.

Park Ranger Jontae Koke says the event is a great way for staff to interact with the public.

She talks about what areas volunteers spent most of the morning cleaning up.

"We usually try and do a highway cleanup, so get the trash along the roadside there. If we have enough volunteers we send the group out to the Bad Lands and clean up some litter out there. We also take a group up Saddle Rock trail to scrub some graffiti off the sand stone," said Koke.

The clean-up event was a preview for National Park Week which kicks off April 19th - 27th this year.

This weekend's admission fees will be waived for all visitors.
