Convicted Gering burglar arrested after speeding through D.U.I. checkpoint

Posted: Updated:
Gering - A Gering man who was sentenced last January to 18 to 48 months in jail for his role in a burglary has another run -in with the law.

20-year-old Shane Merrills was arrested early Sunday morning after running through a D.U.I. checkpoint.

Court documents say Merrills was driving northbound on 10th Street at a high rate of speed. He failed to stop at the checkpoint, causing officers to jump out of the way to avoid being struck by the car.

Sheriff Deputies began pursuit, and stopped him on West 8th Street, and saw him jump into the back seat and have a female passenger climb into the drivers seat.

Deputies smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Merrills, and he failed field sobriety tests. He was charged with driving under the influence, open container, careless driving, obstructing police, and parole violation.

Merrills was convicted of Burglary last May after he and 2 other teens vandalized a residential Gering home. He was sentenced to 18-to-48 months in jail, and was paroled on January 23rd.
