Broadway islands getting 'sustainable landscape' makeover

Posted: Updated:

Parts of Scottsbluff will soon be a little greener and more sustainable.

The islands along Broadway are getting a makeover to a more 'sustainable landscape.'

The islands will soon feature native and well-adapted trees, plants and grasses that require less water and little maintenance.

The first islands to undergo the transformation will be on north Broadway by Bluffs Middle School.

The city's new Stormwater Program Specialist, Leanne Sato, says the plants in the islands will help make the city more water efficient.
"We're hoping that it will tie in with the theme that we've started here in town with native and well-adapted plants and bring a new feeling and a new idea of what landscaping can really be like out here."
Sato says the islands will also serve as a case-study for the city to analyze water conservation.

"We're going to use that to compare water usage between native landscapes as compared to traditional island turf landscapes," Sato says.
