Congressman Smith presents Bayard student with award

Posted: Updated:

One lucky Bayard Elementary School girl received a special award this morning.

Congressman Adrian Smith presented 3rd grader Cambree Schmaltz with an award from the Nebraska Natural Resources District. Her poster won after being submitted to the National Association of Conservation district's poster contest in Washington D.C.

The theme or 2013 was "Where does your water shed?"

Congressman Smith says that it is important to teach kids about conservation and how it influences the economy.
"It took me a while as a kid to really develop that full appreciation and I think sometimes we take for granted the important aspects of life and the economy," says Smith. "And so I like to instill in young people an appreciation perhaps for what is important to the economy because that's their future."
Bayard Elementary School Principal Matt McLaughlin says that Cambree has also organized three fundraisers this year.
