Panhandle man charged with writing bad checks

Posted: Updated:
A Panhandle man has been arrested after getting caught writing bad checks at a Scottsbluff grocery store.

Police arrested Orrey Pickering Tuesday night on four counts of writing bad checks. Earlier in the week, Main Street Market reported they received a bad check. A total of $1,133.54 is what was taken as a result of purchased food, fuel and gift cards.

On Tuesday around 5:20 p.m., police were informed that the suspect was once again at Main Street Market at the checkout getting ready to leave. When police arrived, they observed the store manager tackle Pickering at the East doors. Pickering was then placed into handcuffs and transported to the hospital for a split lip sustained while getting tackled.

Pickering told police he did not not that the checking account was closed, but admitted he only deposited just over $200 into the account. He says the gift cards were already used to buy fuel and food.

He will be arraigned on the charges Wednesday afternoon in Scotts Bluff County Court.
