Nationally recognized speaker leads sexual assault awareness workshop in Scottsbluff

Posted: Updated:
A nationally recognized speaker from Washington D.C. visited the panhandle on Wednesday for a workshop on sexual assault awareness.
Santa Molina-Marshall, who works in the field of sexual violence, led the workshop designed to inform those who work with sexual assault survivors.

More than 70 law enforcement officers, medical personnel and social workers attended the workshop at the Harms Center in Scottsbluff.

Molina-Marshall focused on how trauma and the human brain respond to traumatic events such as sexual and domestic abuse.

She says studies show that if a person is abused, the brain sends signals throughout the body to either fight or flee.
"If that experience of fight or flight does not get completed, it's held in our brain, it's held in our nervous system and we find people unfortunately either getting revictimized or not feeling well," explained Molina-Marshall.
The workshop was put on by the DOVES Program of Western Nebraska.
