May 1st deadline to file personal property returns

Posted: Updated:

The tax deadline is looming for Nebraskans who have yet to file their personal property returns with the County Assessor.

Scotts Bluff County Attorney Amy Ramos says May 1st is the deadline for people to file their personal property returns.

Any tangible, depreciable property used in a trade or business purchased between January 1st of 2013 must be filed with the assessor by Thursday.

She says this includes any property that is allowed for federal depreciation.

"Farm stuff like tractors, farm equipment, for in town, you know, if you're a banker it might be like tables, chairs, maybe artwork or something like that. And a restaurant owner might have cash registers, stoves, that kind of thing, basically anything you could benefit from federally, you would bring it in here and value it."

Ramos says this is the first year people are able to file their personal property returns online, if they already have a schedule set up with the County Assessor's office.
