Winter weather and winds taking their toll

Posted: Updated:
The winds are more brutal than ever, which means more dangers on the road.

Accidents and road closures have become all too common the past few days, and the troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol say winter weather and high winds are to blame.

Troopers responded to eight roll over accidents yesterday, some within just minutes of each other. Lieutenant of traffic services Marty Denton says drivers need to be more aware before they get on the road.

"Well first and foremost, you always want to be buckled up when you're driving. That's the one single thing you can do to try to ensure your safety if you're involved in a motor vehicle accident," says Denton. "Second, with the wind like it is, if you're driving a high profile vehicle—be it a semi or camper trailer, you really have to be diligent."

Denton says that increasing following distance and maintaining proper speed are also a good idea.
