Fischer opposes minimum wage increase

Posted: Updated:
Increasing the federal minimum wage would have a negative effect on jobs. That's what one senator says she thinks about a new proposal.

Senate majority leader Harry Reid has proposed a 40% increase in the federal minimum wage, bringing it to $10.10 per hour.

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer says it is impossible for her to support the increase when she considers the job losses it will bring.

"According to a Bloomberg poll, nearly 6 in 10 Americans would oppose raising the federal minimum wage if it resulted in lost jobs," says Fischer. "So in other words, support for Reid's bill drastically decreases when Americans factor in the disastrous impact that this bill has on jobs."

Fischer says her goal is to help create a stronger and healthier economy.
