Western Nebraska Veterans celebrate Loyalty Day

Posted: Updated:

May 1st is a special day set aside to recognize our loyalty to the US and honor the heritage of our American freedom.
A special party was held this morning for some of America's most loyal people, the veterans.

The Western Nebraska Veterans Home hosted a 'Loyalty Day' celebration, where treats and may day baskets were handed out to veterans to say 'thank you' for their loyalty and service.

John Brehm, Director of Scotts Bluff County Veterans services, says loyalty day is important, especially for our youth.
"We think that it's very important that we explain, especially to the youth, the importance of loyalty. I know older veterans like here at the home have grown up around it and to me, I think there was more patriotism way back when and we're just trying to get that going again."
Loyalty day began to counter the May Day celebrations of the Communist Party after the Russian Revolution.

The day is celebrated in several US communities but is not recognized as a Federal holiday
