Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month kicks off

Posted: Updated:
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness month, and the Nebraska State Patrol is reminding all motorists to share the road.

With the weather getting warmer, motorcyclists are rejoicing with more opportunities to hit the road. But that means all motorists need to become more aware of their surroundings.

Lieutenant of traffic services Marty Denton says that cycle awareness month is for everyone on the road.

“They’re a little more difficult to see, so be sure and check both ways of intersections and be checking the blind spots and be very diligent about the other vehicles out there because motorcycles are much smaller,” says Denton.

Cellis Cycle Center general manager Redo Celli says that business has picked up with the season change and the month will be a nice reminder to share the road.

“Everybody needs a little refresher course on motorcycle safety and to look out for motorcycles," says Celli. "And people riding motorcycles need to be aware of everyone else.”

Officials are also reminding riders and passengers that wearing a helmet is Nebraska law.
