Chadron Community Hospital receives grant from Susan G Komen Foundation

Thousands of dollars are coming to a northern panhandle hospital to help breast cancer patients in the area.

The Chadron Community Hospital has been awarded $30,500 dollars from the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The grant money will help pay for treatment and financial aid for breast cancer patients in Dawes, Sioux, Box
Butte, Sheridan and western Cherry Counties.

Registered Nurse Brenda Rhembrandt, says a lot of financial stress is put on patients during treatment, and the grant money help alleviate some of that stress.

“We know in this rural area of Nebraska our patients have to drive over 100 miles sometimes to receive treatment, so this financial funding helps those patients to successfully complete their treatment,” said Rhembrandt.

Jodi Dannar, the hospital’s Radiology Director, says this is the fifth year the hospital has received funding from the Komen Foundation.

After they received their initial Komen Grant in 2009, Danner said the hospital set up their own foundation called 'Circle of Light' to help patients through other types of cancer.

“We found that helping breast cancer patients was wonderful, but there was a lot of other cancer patients that needed help, so we decided to do our own fundraising,” Danner says.

Circle of Light’s recent fundraiser this April raised more than $31,000 dollars that will help provide financial aid to area cancer patients.

"We have found that when you get diagnosed with cancer, it seems liek you cant work as much, so your funding gets cut, but your expenses go up. So that's why we created the 'Circle of Light' to alleviate some of that pressure."

Dannar says more than 70 cancer patients in five different counties have benefited from more than $200,000 dollars raised by the hospital over the last five years.
