Scottsbluff man, irrigation district employee dies after falling into canal

Posted: Updated:
An irrigation district employee has died after falling into a blazing ditch, where he was burning weeds.

Officials say 67-year-old Llewellyn Mattern of Scottsbluff, who worked for the Pathfinder irrigation district, slipped down a ditch embankment and fell an estimated 11 feet into the fire.

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman says the accident happened Friday afternoon four miles northeast of Mitchell near the intersection of County Road 17 and County Road B.

Overman says Mattern and other employees were burning the canal when he fell.

Deputy Scotts Bluff County Coroner Jeremy Anderson says Mattern was taken to Regional West Medical Center with severe burns on more that 75 percent of his body and was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy is planned next week.
