Members of local organizations are encouraging Nebraskans to take fewer wheels to their job this week.
May is National Bike Month and Monday marks the start of bike to work week.
Several organizations, including Panhandle Public Health District and Sonny's Bike and Fitness, are encouraging people to participate.

The event promotes biking as an alternative to driving to work and will feature discounts for cyclists at numerous restaurants and establishments, a drawing for cycling related prizes, and promotion of the cycling community.

Staff with the Western Nebraska Bicycle Club Facebook page are inviting residents to take pictures with your bike and post it to the page for a chance to win gift cards.

Organizer Daniel Bennett says this is a good way to stay active.
"It's just a chance for people to try a different way of commuting, getting to work, replacing one of their car trips with a trip on a bike. And so it's a good way to get exercise in your regular schedule and also feeling better activating the streets," said Bennett.

The League of American Bicyclists reminds bikers to always wear a helmet and obey all traffic laws while taking to the road on two wheels.
