Harms says next legislative session will be a challenge with new governor, senators

Posted: Updated:

Scottsbluff Senator John Harms meets with his constituents for the last time this morning.

In his final Legislative Wrap up, Harms spoke both of the achievement and challenges of this years legislative session.

He says overall, 460 bills were introduced this legislative session.

Harms says the short 60-day session was riddled with filibusters, and he says the divisions and frustration on the floor was the highest he's seen in his eight years in the legislature.

But with the primaries a day away, Harms says the introduction of a new governor, new senators, and a young chairman, he has high hopes for the future of Nebraska's legislature.

"Its kind of overwhelming for new senators. This may be more of a challenge because Governor Heineman has been there for 10 years so we didn't have a change in Governor, that was the stable side of things. While we were still struggling to find out way you had a governor who had been there for a while. So I Think it will be rather interesting and new, and it should be kind of exciting."

Both candidates seeking harms seat, Valley Bank President John Stunner and Scottsbluff tax attorney Mike Meister were both at Monday's meeting.
