Sasse dominates U.S. Senate race, moves onto November ballot

Posted: Updated:
Tea Party backed candidate Ben Sasse is thrust into the national spotlight after winning the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate.
Sasse says his campaign's upbeat tone won election, not the heavy spending that outside groups poured into the race.

The election was called early on in the evening, with Sasse receiving nearly fifty percent of the votes. Last night he told supporters is looking to take on Capitol Hill to talk about bold conservative ideas.

"And we will go forward into the general election reaffirming the 3 pledges that we made at the beginning of this campaign," says Sasse. "Number one- we said we wouldn't just fight the Obamacare health policy, we would fight Obamacare the failed world view."

The victory is the first for Tea Party-backed groups this year, with one PAC alone spending more than $1.2 million directly on the campaign in support of Sasse.
