Dalton woman strikes plea deal in extortion case to avoid going to trial

Posted: Updated:

The Dalton woman charged with felony extortion has agreed to enter a plea deal while she appeared for a pretrial conference on Tuesday in Cheyenne County District Court.

Prosecutors allege that 30-year-old Kristie Keenan attempted to extort money from Jason Frei of Potter, after he allegedly inappropriately touched her daughter.

Currently, Keenan is charged with Theft by Extortion, a Class III felony.

Deputy County Attorney Jonathon Stellar says that a plea deal was reached, and an entry of plea will be scheduled within the next few weeks.

According to arrest affidavits, Keenan found about an incident where  Frei  had allegedly touched Keenan's seven-year-old daughter inappropriately, and demanded that she be financially compensated. When members from the Sheriff's office went to arrest Frei, he told them that he had paid Keenan $10,000 cash of the $20,000 that she was making him pay.

In December, Frei pled no contest to amended charges of negligent child abuse and attempted witness tampering. Prosecutors agreed to lower the original charge of sexually assaulting a child in exchange for Frei's pleas.
