Minimum wage increase being pushed in Nebraska

Posted: Updated:
A petition is circulating to create a ballot measure for the November election to increase minimum wage to nine dollars an hour.
The group 'Nebraskans for Better Wages' announced the petition drive Wednesday. Several state senators are leading the effort, with help from other groups.

A January poll of Nebraskans shows 60 percent of respondents say they favored raising the wage. Nebraska State Senator hopeful Mike Meister says that he feels that an increase of minimum wage could be beneficial.
"People who are afraid of minimum wage haven't really studied it," explains Meister. "Because if you look at it, the states that have already raised their minimum wage like Washington- their economy is booming and a big piece of that is people have money to spend."
Meister adds that a wage increase will help rebuild the middle class and lessen reliance on public assistance.
