Alliance's Carhenge a must-see on 2014 Passport Program

The Nebraska Tourism Commission chose eleven attractions in the panhandle for people to visit as a part of this year's Passport Program.

Reporter Brandon Marshall heads to Alliance and highlights the creative creation called Carhenge.

Located two and a half miles north of Alliance, you'll find Nebraska's answer to England's Stonehenge.

"Carhenge though by no doubt needs any special category to be recognized because it's one of the fan favorites," explains Commission Director Kathy McKillip. "It's Nebraska's favorite and when people see it they are really just stimulated by its uniqueness."

In the summer of 1987 - Jim Reinders uniquely placed 38 vintage cars in a circle to reflect the British replica. People from Alliance to Australia and everywhere in between have visited the attraction.

"I was visiting with some folks out there and I said you've got a different accent than a Nebraska accent," explains Alliance Tourism Director Kevin Howard. "And he says, 'Yes we live in England, actually 25 miles from Stonehenge and so we wanted to come over here and wanted to see Carhenge'."

Carhenge is a memorial to Reinders' father, who once lived where Carhenge now stands.
Since its creation...millions of people have visited the attraction along Highway 87.

"Car lovers like to go out and just look at the cars, photographers like to go take pictures of the light and the shadow of Carhenge. Artists just appreciate it for the art factor of it."

Whatever your reason for visiting this spot on Nebraska's Passport Program, McKillip says visitors should plan to visit in June.

"I think what's really cool about Carhenge on June 21st is our summer solstice. It'll be wild times out there. That's something that you would want to consider to take a part of as well."

A day-long fundraiser for Carhenge is set to take place June 21st. Organizers are planning to watch the summer solstice sunrise and enjoy food and music throughout the day.

Creator Jim Reinders is expected to make an appearance from Texas for the festivities.
