Johanns holds VA accountable for care of veterans

Mike Johanns is one of many U.S. Senators who is putting Veterans Affairs Secretary Erik Shineski under fire for questionable treatment at some of the VA Hospitals across the nation.
In a hearing on Capitol Hill Thursday, Shineski was questioned on his agency's care of the nations veterans. The hearing was held in light of allegations of secret wait lists and forty deaths in Phoenix, as veterans waited for care from a VA hospital.
Despite previous committee hearings evaluating the VA, Johanns says their track record is only getting worse.
"I don't see the change that is necessary [at the VA] and what worries me is that it's systemic," says Johanns. "It's cultural. People have just adopted this mode of operation as the way of doing business. Do you share my concern?"
"There is a distinction between a medical mistake and manipulation- or cooking the books," explains Shineski. "In the case of a medical mistake - I want someone to stand up and say, 'I made a mistake'."
This adds to the long list of problems at the VA, including disability claims backlogs, construction backlogs and deteriorating facilities in need of replacement.
