Construction projects slated on northern and southern panhandle roadways

Posted: Updated:

Construction work on Highway 71 is scheduled to begin this week, if weather permits.

Crews will be working on Highway 71 from the junction of US 2 near Crawford, west to the Sioux/Box Butte County line.

Work consists of widening the roadway two feet on each side, roadway base stabilization, and a three-inch asphalt overlay.

The $2.6 million dollar road project is contracted to Simon Contractors and subsidiaries of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The Nebraska Department of Roads says traffic on this seven-mile improvement project will be maintained with flaggers and a pilot car as needed during the day, with both lanes open nightly.

Work is anticipated to be completed by the end of July 20.

Construction continues to the southern panhandle

Traffic will be head-to-head on parts of Interstate 80 for the next few months as crews work to repair the road.

The $23 million dollar project calls for complete removal of existing roadways and reconstruction of the two 12-foot lanes in each direction.

The span of the project extends from Sunol to Lodgepole.

Crews will be working on one lane at a time, and traffic will be reduced to head-to-head on the existing lane.

The Nebraska Department of Roads says the current pavement on that section of the interstate is not adequate for the volume and weight of traffic volumes expected in the future.

Work is anticipated to be completed on the first lane by mid-October.
