Experts warn boaters to be safe this Memorial weekend

Posted: Updated:
Hundreds of boats and personal water crafts will be out on the water this Memorial Day Weekend to kick off the summer boating season and experts are reminding people to be safe.

This week is National Safety Boating week and experts are reminding people to be vigilant on the water as on the roads.

They say you should not overcrowd your boats and to always wear life vests especially if you're jet skiing.

Lee Schwartzkopf of Kawasaki Korner in Scottsbluff has managed boats and jet skis for 45 years. He says people should be mindful of how many boats are out on the water at the same time.

"Years ago you'd see one, two, three... or a dozen of them out there," says Schwartzkopf. "Today, you've go out there and you see 40 or 50 of them out there. Everybody's out there for the same reason to have fun and this is where you have to be careful,"

Experts also remind boaters to make sure that your boat is licensed.
